ANNUAL LUNCHEON: March 12, 2011
Fifty-four people attended the annual Coronado Democratic
Club Luncheon on Saturday, March 12th. The mood was positive and upbeat as members enjoyed
delicious food and stimulating conversation. Sanford Lakoff spoke about what Democrats need to do to be
successful in the 2012 elections.
Jerry Greenspan would like to issue a (humorous) apology. He had asked the members to hold their
applause until he had named all the people that had made the event possible,
but then, when he finished saying the names, he failed to ask the members to
applaud. Perhaps any club members
reading this now can offer their mental applause to everyone who made this
event a success.

After enjoying the delicious food, club members get to work thinking about how to help get Democrats elected in 2012.
State Senator Denise Ducheny delivered a talk to 45 members of
the Coronado Democratic Club at the January 15th General Meeting,
the first of the new year. Senator
Ducheny addressed, among other topics, the urgent issue of the budget shortfall
in the state of California. She
said that, though it will be difficult to pass the initiatives needed to
balance the budget, Governor Jerry Brown is at least serious about trying.
Senator Ducheny served in the California State Senate from
2002 through 2010, representing the 40th District, which includes portions of
San Diego and Riverside Counties and all of Imperial County.

HOLIDAY POTLUCK PARTY: Sunday, December 5, 2010
Sixty members of the
club turned out in high spirits for our annual holiday party.
President Jerry Greenspan laughingly said he had never
seen so big a turnout for the fifth night of Chanukah.
In true potluck form,
all of the food was brought by club members – and we have some great cooks in
out midst!
Special thanks for the success of the evenings go out to Annette Biggar, who arranged for the room (and a very big and comfortable room it was), which was festively decorated for Christmas; Mercy Mandelbaum and Diana Greenspan,
who took care of the many party arrangements, including bringing
supplies, wine, beer and soft drinks, and – perhaps most impressively –
organizing their husbands.
Three partiers, and one message for a Democratic Senator. (Credit to Diana Greenspan for organizing President Jerry Greenspan's wardrobe.)

We are already making plans to make next year's party even more successful!
At the November General Meeting, Casey Dominguez, Professor of Political Science and International Relations at the University of San Diego, spoke to club members about the significance of the most recent midterm election results.

The Coronado Democratic Club hosted a forum for the three candidates for Coronado City Council on Tuesday evening. The forum was open to the public and held in the Coronado Public Library. Candidates Al Ovram, Barbara Denny and Doug Metz are running for two open City Council seats.

DRAWING LESSONS FROM RECENT HISTORY: September 11, 2010
Forty people participated in the “9/11 Lessons Learned Forum”
held on Saturday, the ninth anniversary of the event. James Halleberg, former
Pastor of the Coronado Resurrection Lutheran Church – and a Coronado Democrat –
led the forum.

Our 4th of July party and parade were unqualified
successes!
On Friday of the July 4th weekend, Courtenay McGowan made her lovely
home the site for a great outdoor feast she and Bill Gise had prepared. About 50 people came to the
party, to help decorate motor vehicles and bikes for the parade, and enjoy good
conversation and great food. Laughter and smiles were the rule. This is not the
first time Courtenay has opened her home to our club members, and I think I
speak for all who attended the party that she deserves a big blue star and our
most sincere thanks.
The Coronado Democratic Club turned out strong in numbers and spirit.
We were almost 40 strong – and I do mean strong – for the
parade on Saturday. We paraded down Orange Avenue in grand fashion, riding on
Segways, Courtenay's van, Ron Noble's 55 Chevy Impala convertible (with donkey,
of course), two electric cars, a scooter, several bikes, and our own two feet. We were greeted by far more applause
then I’d expected. It seems that many people were delighted to see us and know
that this club exists.

The strength of participation in the party, preparations, and parade made this one of the best July 4th
events ever. Very special thanks
go to Diana Greenspan and Jackie Haney, co-chairs of the Parade Committee. Both
women gave an enormous amount of time and energy in getting all the pieces to
fit. The club members who lined the parade route saw how well the pieces did
indeed work. Congratulations to all who made this special event possible!

The Coronado Democratic Club hosted a forum of candidates running for the 79th California State Assembly District seat at their May, 2010 General Meeting. Pearl Quinones, Jack Doyle and Ben Hueso answered questions submitted by the audience and Ron Mandlebaum served as moderator for the event.
The meeting also focused on the Club's upcoming participation in Coronado's 4th of July Parade, to ge held this year on July 3rd. Please see the President's Message page for further information about how you can join the fun!

On Saturday night, April 10th, ten members of the Coronado Democratic Club attended the 30th annual Eleanor and Franklin D. Roosevelt dinner. A few of us, arriving early, spent time meeting members of other county Democratic clubs, looking to, among other things, learn how they relate to the county party members and what strategies they may have developed to facilitate the functioning of their clubs.
Jess Durfee, the county chairperson, welcomed the 400 plus members and recognized several people who've contributed mightily to the strong showing we Democrats experienced in the 2008 elections. The tempo was definitely very upbeat, no doubt influenced by the recent Healthcare Bill passage.
Guests speakers included local Congress members Susan Davis and Bob Filner. The keynote address was delivered by Secretary of State Debra Bowen, who spoke about the need for improved voting procedures, especially for our soldiers employed overseas.
The Coronado Democratic Club's Annual Luncheon was held at the Coronado Golf Course Clubhouse Bar & Grill on Saturday, March 20th. Our guest speaker was George Mitrovich, president of the City Club of San Diego and the Denver Forum. In addition to being a noted speaker, Mr. Mitrovich is a writer and contributor to several leading North American newspapers, has served on numerous boards and public agencies and is active in San Diego civic affairs.
Mr. Mitrovich's address to the club, entitled "Is that all there is? Barack Obama and the Politics of Hope," was well received.
